A couple of years ago, I moved to another country and therefore didn’t know anything or anyone around me anymore. Putting myself in such a situation basically forced me to grow up and I just couldn’t do it. I failed over and over. Friends disappeared and therapists couldn’t help me. Why couldn’t I build up relations like anyone else? Why couldn’t I grow like anyone else? Why was I thinking differently than everybody else? What was wrong with me?

However, mainly because of that experience, my perspective changed. I moved to the Netherlands asking myself “what’s wrong with me?” and…

Day 1

Choose a job with incredibly high expectations. You don’t necessarily want anything that makes you feel comfortable, you need to find a gig where you can learn a lot in a short amount of time. Take any salary they offer, even if it sounds quite low. The more important thing is the experience you’ll gain. If you do well, work hard, stay loyal, and always give 100 percent of what you’ve got, you’ll get promoted in no time and be able to make a tremendous career jump.

Day 2

On your first day at work, make sure you present yourself in the…

As you might have heard in one of my previous stories, I lived in Amsterdam before and I didn’t really like the city. To me, it’s an over-expensive cold place where you’re usually flatmates with rats. You might wonder, how did I even end up in this place? Well, I’m gonna tell you? Ok ok ok?

This story starts on a regular Friday in January of 2017. I was crushing it at a food startup in Antwerp living “la vida loca”. …

Since I’m living in Barcelona, I visit comedy/storytelling events from time to time. However, I was having some trouble with which event was what day as they all had different Facebook pages, etc. Then I remembered I was a developer and decided to create a simple list with all the upcoming events myself. As I wanted to create something quickly, I decided to bootstrap a project with Next.js so I could use both server-side and client-side React.

Getting the data

As you might have already assumed, I used Facebook’s API to get the event data. I could’ve used one or another NPM package…

When I were a teenager, I was already into computer science and dreamed about working at a large company like Facebook one day. That was the true American dream to me. Just working there in Silicon Valley, earning some money and building up a life there was all I wanted at that time. Everything would just be so much better over there. I would be happy all the time and everything would be perfect. So I thought…

Today I work at a large tech company, not in America, but in Amsterdam. Although Amsterdam is nothing like Silicon Valley, it’s a…

As a web developer in an innovative start-up environment, I sometimes feel misunderstood. Mostly by non-tech or very conservative people but sometimes also by other developers who work in a different kind of environment. Today, I’m working as a front end developer at FLAVR, a service that connects people who are better at cooking than I am with people who like food. This is actually my fourth job not only at a startup, but also at a startup where the product or service is the core business.

Some of the questions I get all the time are like ‘How could…

Since I started to like writing blogs, I think it became around time to write one about one of my favourite topics: technical debt. Before you read this, note that I’m not a manager, that I don’t know anything about economics and that I’m only sharing my own thoughts here. It’s ok to disagree with me, but now you have at least the ability to read my point of view.

Objectively, what is tech debt?

According to the free encyclopedia Wikipedia, technical debt means ‘a concept in programming that reflects the extra development work that arises when code that is easy to implement in the…
